Our Journey
The educational journey of Kendriya Vidyalaya Almora began in 1986, when the Vidyalaya started with Classes I to V. During its initial years, the school functioned from a temporary building at Poorvi Pokharkhali, Almora.
As the number of students grew and higher classes were introduced progressively, the Vidyalaya expanded its academic scope and gradually developed into a Senior Secondary school offering education up to Class XII.
A significant milestone came in 1999, when the Vidyalaya moved from its temporary premises to its permanent campus at Syalidhar on Kosi Road, near RTO Almora. The shift to the permanent campus marked an important phase in the institution’s development and created greater opportunities for strengthening academic programmes, co-curricular activities and the overall educational experience of students.
Over the years, the Vidyalaya has continued to evolve in response to changing educational needs while remaining rooted in the values, traditions and educational philosophy of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan.
A Kendriya Vidyalaya
Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan was established with the objective of providing a common programme of education to children of transferable Central Government employees, including Defence and Para-military personnel, while also serving other eligible groups in accordance with KVS admission provisions. KVS seeks to pursue excellence in school education, promote innovation and experimentation in pedagogy, and foster national integration and a sense of Indianness among learners.
Kendriya Vidyalayas follow a common academic framework and are affiliated with CBSE. They are co-educational, composite schools designed to provide continuity in education and facilitate the mobility of students whose families may be transferred from one part of the country to another.
At the heart of the KVS educational philosophy is the belief that education should develop not only knowledge and academic competence but also the talent, enthusiasm, creativity, values and capabilities of every learner.
Academic Profile
PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya Almora provides a continuous educational pathway from the foundational stage to the Senior Secondary level.
With the introduction of Balvatika-III, the Vidyalaya has extended its educational provision to learners at the foundational stage. At this level, learning is designed to be joyful, play-based and activity-oriented, with attention to the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional and physical development of children.
At the school level, the Vidyalaya follows the CBSE-aligned academic framework and provides students with opportunities to develop conceptual understanding, communication skills, problem-solving abilities and a positive attitude towards learning.
At the Senior Secondary level, the Vidyalaya offers Science and Commerce streams in Classes XI and XII, enabling students to pursue areas of academic interest and prepare for higher education and diverse career pathways.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Education at the Vidyalaya extends beyond textbooks and classroom instruction. Students are provided opportunities to participate in sports, games, art, cultural activities, literary activities, exhibitions, competitions, educational programmes and other co-curricular experiences. Such opportunities help learners develop confidence, creativity, communication, teamwork, discipline and leadership.
The Vidyalaya seeks to create a learning environment in which students are encouraged not merely to know, but to question, explore, create, collaborate and apply what they learn.
Our Approach to Learning
The Vidyalaya recognises that meaningful education involves active participation of the learner. Accordingly, increasing emphasis is placed on competency-based, experiential and activity-oriented learning. Students are encouraged to connect classroom learning with their surroundings and everyday experiences. Learning through projects, activities, practical work, discussions, experimentation and technology-supported resources helps make education more relevant and engaging.
At the foundational and primary stages, special attention is given to making learning enjoyable and age-appropriate. As students progress to higher classes, increasing emphasis is placed on conceptual clarity, analytical thinking, problem-solving, independent learning and preparation for higher education. KVS also places emphasis on continuous professional development of teachers so that classroom practices remain responsive to contemporary educational approaches and the objectives of National Education Policy 2020.

The school environment provides opportunities for students to understand their surroundings, appreciate local culture and heritage, develop environmental sensitivity and recognise their role as responsible members of society. The Vidyalaya also values the partnership among students, teachers, parents and the wider community, recognising that meaningful education is strengthened when all stakeholders work together for the development of children.
